A shocking retirement announcement has rocked the football world, with Spanish star Marcos Llorente announcing his retirement from international football, leaving La Roja fans in disbelief.

The 31-year-old announced on social media on Thursday that he is retiring from international football, just six years after making his debut for the national side.

Llorente confirmed in a lengthy Instagram post that, after much consideration, he has decided to part ways with the Spanish national team.
The Atletico Madrid star stressed that the decision was completely personal and had nothing to do with his playing time at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He also said he believes he still has several years ahead of him and is honoured to have represented Spain.
“I am aware that I am still young and that, perhaps, if I continued doing things well, I could still have years left to play in this shirt. I know many of you will not understand, and, surely, I would not have understood it either from the outside. But this is a personal decision, one that I have thought about deeply and, above all, one that I have felt deeply. Llorente wrote.
“Regardless of whether I had gone to the World Cup or not, or whether we had won or not, I had already made this decision.
I can only be infinitely grateful to all the people I have met along these years who have made it possible for my family and me to experience unique and unforgettable moments,” he continued.
“I will take everything I have experienced with me, but above all, these last 52 days. With a wonderful group that fought until the end to leave Spain at the very top. And that is exactly what they did.
It has been an honour to represent my country and to be part of this history.
Thank you for everything.
A big hug to everyone,” Llorente concluded.
Llorente earned 27 caps for La Roja and retired without scoring for the national team.
He was part of Spain’s squad for Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup before helping the team win the World Cup this year in July.
