Ranking every SEC team entering college football's Week 1

The 2026 college football season is here, and College Football Playoff hopes span across the SEC. All 16 teams in the conference take the field for the first time this week, meaning questions remain for each program. Six new coaches enter the picture, each optimistic that they can turn around their programs and compete in the SEC.

However, before the first game is played and teams have a chance to establish who they are on the field, we need to establish where each program begins the season in our initial power rankings.

Here is how we rank all 16 SEC teams entering Week 1.

1. Georgia Bulldogs

  • 2025Record: 12-2 (7-1 SEC)
  • Record: 0-0 (0-0 SEC)
  • Up Next: Tennessee State Tigers

The No. 1 spot was no debate. The Georgia Bulldogs are the back-to-back SEC champions and return 68% of their roster from the previous season. Combine roster continuity with the best coach in the sport, and UGA should remain at the top of the power rankings. Not only did they retain a good portion of their roster, but they also added two key players on the offensive side of the ball to highlight their transfer portal class: wide receiver Isiah Canion and running back Dante Dowdell.

2. Texas Longhorns

  • 2025Record: 10-3 (6-2 SEC)
  • Record: 0-0 (0-0 SEC)
  • Up Next: Texas State Bobcats

Texas will enter the 2026 season as the No. 2 team in our power rankings. After spending a season developing and learning the offense, Arch Manning finally took over the Longhorns' offense in 2025. Manning had his ups and downs in his first year as a starter, but he really showed promise following their upset loss to Florida on Oct. 4.

After that loss, Manning went on to complete 62% of his passes and throw for 15 touchdowns and only two interceptions in an eight-game span, including his 2025 Cheez-It Citrus Bowl performance against the Michigan Wolverines that saw him throw for 221 yards and two touchdowns, while adding another two on the ground. Texas also made a splash move this offseason, bringing Cam Coleman to Austin to give their star quarterback more options in the passing game.

3. Oklahoma Sooners

  • 2025Record: 10-3 (6-2 SEC)
  • Up Next: Texas-El Paso Miners

Oklahoma comes in at No. 3 in our SEC power rankings, with the Sooners bringing back plenty of talent from a defense that helped establish them as one of the conference’s toughest teams last season. Brent Venables is a defensive savant, always giving Oklahoma a strong foundation on that side of the ball.

The Sooners also strengthen their skill rooms by bringing in three wide receivers and three tight ends from the portal, giving quarterback John Mateer more weapons to work with. Mateer was on his way to becoming a Heisman Trophy finalist before suffering a hand injury last season, but his return came sooner than expected, and he never quite looked like the same player afterward.

If Mateer can return to his pre-injury form, Oklahoma has the defensive foundation and offensive firepower to compete with the SEC’s best teams.

4. Alabama Crimson Tide

  • 2025Record: 11-4 (7-1 SEC)
  • Up Next: East Carolina Pirates

Alabama enters the 2026 season as the No. 4 team in our SEC power rankings. Alabama's streak of 17 consecutive top-10 appearances in the AP preseason poll has ended this year with their No. 13 ranking. That could mean that head coach Kalen DeBoer has less to prove than he did during his first two seasons in Tuscaloosa.

Nevertheless, the Crimson Tide will always have talent suiting up for the program, and none is more important than their starting quarterback. DeBoer recently announced that Keelon Russell will be the starting quarterback over Austin Mack. Russell now has the opportunity to lead an Alabama offense looking to return to its place among the SEC's elite, but how quickly he settles into the role could go a long way toward determining the Crimson Tide's ceiling this season.

5. Texas A&M Aggies

  • 2025Record: 11-2 (7-1 SEC)
  • Up Next: Missouri State Bears

Texas A&M comes in at No. 5 in our SEC power rankings. Offensive standouts Marcel Reed and Mario Craver return to the program, giving the Aggies much-needed continuity following their 11-0 start last season. Reed showed plenty of promise throughout the majority of last season, helping Texas A&M establish itself as one of the SEC's better teams and a solidified CFP contender.

However, the Aggies will need to maintain the consistency they showed for most of last season while putting the way 2025 ended behind them. Reed struggled in his final two games of the season, including the College Football Playoff first-round matchup against Miami, throwing two interceptions and failing to record a touchdown. If Reed can put that finish behind him and return to the form he displayed for most of the season, Texas A&M has the talent to compete in the conference.

6. LSU

  • 2025Record: 7-6 (3-5 SEC)
  • Up Next: Clemson Tigers

LSU enters the 2026 season at No. 6 in our power rankings. LSU made a big move at the end of last season, hiring Lane Kiffin, and with that, expectations rose from the 7-6 season they had last year. There is much to be excited about: the Tigers revamped their roster, bringing in the top transfer portal class, including Sam Leavitt and Josh Seaton, to become pillars of the offense.

7. Ole Miss Rebels

  • 2025Record: 13-2 (7-1 SEC)
  • Up Next: Louisville Cardinals

Ole Miss lands at No. 7 in our SEC power rankings, which is lower than where the Rebels appear in many preseason projections. Ole Miss established itself as a legitimate SEC contender in the last few seasons, winning at least 10 games in the last three years; however, there are reasons to believe the program could take a step back in 2026. The Rebels moved forward with Pete Golding following Lane Kiffin’s departure, and maintaining the same success after a coach leaves is not a guarantee, especially if it's an in-house hire.

All that being said, Ole Miss still has plenty of talent, including running back Kewan Lacy and quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, who has been considered one of, if not the best, at his position. Despite the talent on the roster, I’m expecting the Rebels to take a step back this season compared to the heights they reached under Kiffin.

8. Florida Gators

  • 2025Record: 4-8 (2-6 SEC)
  • Up Next: Florida Atlantic Owls

Florida comes in at No. 8 in our SEC power rankings. The Gators enter the 2026 season under new head coach Jon Sumrall. Florida returns 66% of its roster, which is rich with talent across their skill positions, including All-SEC running back Jadan Baugh.

Sumrall has never won fewer than nine games in a college football season during his coaching career, and now he gets the opportunity to test that success in the SEC. The Gators have enough returning talent and coaching stability to be the conference's biggest surprise, but a lot will depend on how quickly Sumrall can translate his success to Gainesville.

9. Missouri Tigers

  • 2025Record: 8-5 (4-4 SEC)
  • Up Next: Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions

Missouri lands at No. 9 in our SEC power rankings. The Tigers have been one of the most consistent teams in the SEC since Eli Drinkwitz has taken over the program. Since 2020 the program has competed in five bowl games, winning two of them, which include a Cotton Bowl victory in 2023.

Mizzou looks to remain consistent and finally get over the hump and join the SEC's premier teams and has positioned themself to do so, adding 30 commits from the portal that include quarterback Austin Simmons to pair with their dynamic running back, Ahmad Hardy.

10. South Carolina Gamecocks

  • 2025Record: 4-8 (1-7 SEC)
  • Up Next: Kent State Golden Flashes

South Carolina enters the season as the No. 10 team in our SEC power rankings. The Gamecocks have never won over nine games in the Shane Beamer era, but that looks to change under new offensive coordinator Kendal Briles. Briles looks to finally unlock star quarterback LaNorris Sellers and help him reach his potential.

Defensively, South Carolina ranked among the top 50 in the nation, mostly in part due to NFL draft prospect Dylan Stewart, who should continue to hold down their front four.

11. Auburn Tigers

  • 2025Record: 5-7 (1-7 SEC)
  • Up Next: Baylor Bears

Auburn enters the new campaign ranked No. 11 in our SEC power rankings. The Tigers were one of the six teams in the conference to hire a new head coach, bringing Alex Golesh from South Florida. Golesh was active in the portal, securing a top-10 class in the transfer portal, including his quarterback from South Florida, Byrum Brown, to help turn around the program as they did at USF.

12. Tennessee Volunteers

  • 2025Record: 8-5 (4-4 SEC)
  • Up Next: Furman Paladins

Tennessee starts the season ranked No. 12 in our SEC power rankings. The Volunteers will start five-star freshman Faizon Brandon this season at quarterback, marking the first time the program has started a true freshman in Week One since 2004. The team will likely lean on running back Desean Bishop to be a security blanket for the freshman as he goes through growing pains. UT's defense also looks to be well experienced, retaining veterans in the middle of their unit.

13. Mississippi State Bulldogs

  • 2025Record: 5-8 (1-7 SEC)
  • Up Next: Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks

Mississippi State comes in at No. 13 in our SEC power rankings. The Bulldogs will start Kamario Taylor at quarterback this season full-time. The sophomore showed promise last season, contributing 13 total touchdowns and one interception. The program looks to finally be competitive under Jeff Lebby, failing to reach at least six wins in each of his first two seasons.

14. Vanderbilt Commodores

  • 2025Record: 10-3 (6-2 SEC)
  • Up Next: Austin Peay Governors

Vanderbilt will enter the 2026 season as the No. 14 team in our power rankings. The Commodores lost their veteran quarterback Diego Pavia to the NFL and hoped that the successor would be five-star Jared Curtis. However, Curtis lost the quarterback competition to senior Blaze Berlowitz. It will be tough for the Commodores to return to their 10-3 form from 2025, only retaining 44% of their production.

15. Kentucky Wildcats

  • 2025Record: 5-7 (2-6 SEC)
  • Up Next: Youngstown State Penguins

The Kentucky Wildcats rank No. 15 in our SEC power rankings. Will Stein takes over the program as his first-ever head coaching opportunity. Previously, Stein served as Oregon's offensive coordinator, which ranked top 15 in the country. The former quarterback should definitely bring new air to the program, but it will take time to reach the SEC's elite teams.

16. Arkansas Razorbacks

  • 2025Record: 2-10 (0-8 SEC)
  • Up Next: North Alabama Lions

Arkansas enters the 2026 season as the No. 16 team in our SEC power rankings. Arkansas hired Ryan Silverfield from Memphis, where he never had a losing season. There may be little to no expectations for this program as they face the toughest schedule in the entire nation.
