Red Sox give latest injury updates on Roman Anthony, Garrett Whitlock, Trevor Story, others

MIAMI — Red Sox left fielder Roman Anthony, shortstop Trevor Story and utility player Isiah Kiner-Falefa will all resume their rehab assignments Tuesday for Triple-A Worcester.

They will be in the starting lineup when the WooSox host Scranton/Wilkes-Barre at Polar Park.
Story, who’s returning from surgery on May 21 to repair a sports hernia, will be re-evaluated after Tuesday’s game with the potential of joining Boston here in Miami on Wednesday or against the Yankees in New York on Friday.
Interim manager Chad Tracy said Anthony and Kiner-Falefa will “definitely not” join the Red Sox in Miami in Wednesday.
Anthony (torn ligament under right ring finger) and Kiner-Falefa (left forearm inflammation) will play both Tuesday and Wednesday for Worcester. The Red Sox then will re-evaluate their statuses Thursday.
“We’ll see on Trevor (for Wednesday) but like we’re still building some games for all those guys,” Tracy said.
Story is just 4 for 21 with four singles, no walks and five strikeouts in six rehab games for Worcester.
Anthony is 3 for 11 with a home run, double, three RBIs, two walks and four strikeouts in four rehab games for Double-A Portland.
Kiner-Falefa is 1 for 13 with two walks and four strikeouts in four rehab games for Worcester.
“Results are good but when you’re doing minor league rehab games and you’ve been down for a while, that’s probably a few notches down the list,” Tracy said. “It’s more about game load, like accumulation on the legs, back-to-back nines (nine-inning games). Whatever the specific injury is, like getting tested. For Izzy, that’s like swing volume for the arm. For Trevor, it’s like getting tested on the bases moving laterally. For Roman, it’s swing volume in the hand.”
Whitlock to throw live BP on WednesdaySetup man Garrett Whitlock, who the Red Sox placed on the 15-day injured list with right elbow soreness on Aug. 13 (retroactive to Aug. 10), traveled with Boston to Miami. He will throw a live batting practice here at LoanDepot Park on Wednesday.
“See how that goes and how he feels and if we’re able to activate him after that,” Tracy said.
Boston has an off day Thursday. Whitlock — who threw a bullpen session on Sunday — could be activated as early as Friday when the Red Sox play in New York.
“Obviously getting out on the field and facing some hitters, even if it’s not a rehab game, is important,” Tracy said. “So he’ll do that Wednesday.”
Slaten stayed back in BostonJustin Slaten (right elbow inflammation) remained back in Boston to continue his throwing progression. Slaten’s IL stint is dated back to Aug. 12.
“Slaten stayed back and he’s continuing to ramp up his throwing program,” Tracy said. “Obviously, he was about four or five days behind Wit, so he was out to 90 feet the other day and he’ll keep increasing intensity in his throwing. And we’ll check in with him as he goes, but he’s obviously a little further behind.”
Other updates~ The medical staff did imaging on Curtis Mead’s fractured wrist at the four-week mark Monday. But Tracy did not yet have the results of the imaging.
~ Garrett Crochet (shoulder inflammation) is still throwing out to 90 feet. “Still increasing intent,” Tracy said.
