The latest Henley Passport Index ranks the world’s passports by the number of destinations their holders can access without a visa before travelling. The 2026 index covers 199 passports and 227 destinations, and shows a sizeable gap between the most and least mobile passports.

While no African passport comes close to the global leaders, a handful of countries offer considerably more international mobility than others.
Here are the most powerful passports in Africa in 2026, according to the Henley ranking.
1. Seychelles
Global rank: 23rd
Visa-free access: 155 destinations
The Seychelles passport is once again the most powerful on the African continent.
Its holders can access 155 destinations without needing a visa in advance, putting the island nation 23rd globally.
For a country with a population of only around 130 000 people, the passport punches well above its weight when it comes to global mobility.
2. Mauritius
Global rank: 26th
Visa-free access: 149 destinations
Mauritius takes second place in Africa, with its powerful passport offering access to 149 destinations without a prior visa.
The Indian Ocean island nation is also one of only two African countries to feature inside the global top 30.
Mauritius has consistently ranked among Africa’s passport leaders, giving its citizens considerably more international travel freedom than most of the continent.
3. South Africa
Global rank: 50th
Visa-free access: 101 destinations
South Africa remains the continent’s third-most powerful passport, with access to 101 destinations without a prior visa.
It is also the only mainland African country in the top three.
The South African passport sits 50th globally in the 2026 ranking, placing it firmly in the top half of the world’s passports.
For South African travellers, the 100-plus destinations available without securing a visa beforehand give the passport a significant advantage over most of its continental counterparts.
4. Botswana
Global rank: 62nd
Visa-free access: 81 destinations
Botswana takes fourth place in Africa, with its passport providing access to 81 destinations without a prior visa.
The country ranks 62nd globally, putting it ahead of a number of larger and more populous countries.
Botswana’s position also makes it the second-strongest passport in mainland southern Africa after South Africa.
5. Namibia
Global rank: 66th
Visa-free access: 74 destinations
Namibia claims fifth place in Africa.
Namibian passport holders can travel to 74 destinations without obtaining a visa before departure, according to the 2026 index.
6. Lesotho
Global rank: 67th
Visa-free access: 73 destinations
Lesotho is next, with its passport offering access to 73 destinations without a prior visa.
The small mountain kingdom is ranked 67th globally and remains one of the strongest passports in southern Africa.
7. eSwatini
Global rank: 68th
Visa-free access: 71 destinations
eSwatini ranks seventh in Africa, with passport holders able to access 71 destinations without securing a visa in advance.
The country is also ranked 68th globally.
It sits just ahead of Morocco, which also has access to 71 destinations available without a prior visa.
8. Kenya
Global rank: 69th
Visa-free access: 70 destinations
Kenya takes the eighth spot.
Kenyan passport holders can access 70 destinations without obtaining a visa before travelling, putting the country 69th globally. Kenya also shares this spot with another African country, Malawi.
9. Rwanda

Rwanda ranks ninth in Africa, with passport holders able to access 68 destinations without securing a visa in advance.
The country is also ranked 70th globally.
It sits just ahead of a three-way group of African countries with 68 destinations available without a prior visa, including Tanzania and The Gambia.
10. Ghana
Global rank: 71st
Visa-free access: 67 destinations
Rounding out the top 10 is Ghana, with access to 67 visa-free destinations.
What the rankings show
The gap between Africa’s strongest passports and the world’s strongest remains substantial.
Singapore holds the number-one position globally, with access to 192 destinations. Japan, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates share second place with access to 188 destinations.
By comparison, even Africa’s strongest passport – Seychelles – offers access to 155 destinations.
The rankings highlight the uneven nature of global mobility. While Seychelles and Mauritius perform strongly by African standards, many countries on the continent remain much further down the global table.
The Henley Passport Index is based on access without a prior visa and includes visa-free entry, visa-on-arrival arrangements and certain electronic travel authorisations. Travel rules can change, so travellers should always check the latest requirements before booking a trip.
