Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has escaped a suspension but has been handed a hefty fine following his altercation with Sri Lanka's Asitha Fernando. Jaiswal appeared to headbutt the SL pacer after being provoked following his dismissal. The ICC has slapped a fine of 25 per cent of their match fee, which amounts to ₹3.75 Lakh.

Why was Jaiswal fined?

Fernando and Jaiswal clashed in the 17th over after the former dismissed the Indian batter, with an exchange of words leading to a head-to-head confrontation. Both players admitted the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by ICC Match Referee Andy Pycroft.

As a result, no formal hearings were required. Jaiswal and Fernando were fined 25 per cent of their match fee and were handed one demerit point each. As per the latest information surrounding match fees, Jaiswal makes ₹15 lakh per test match. A 25% fine would result in the Rajasthan Royals opener being docked ₹3.75 Lakh.

What did Jaiswal say?

Yashasvi Jaiswal has responded to criticism from commentator Harsha Bhogle following his heated confrontation with Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando during the second Test in Colombo. Jaiswal appeared to have headbutted Fernando after being provoked, risking a fine or a suspension.

Responding to the Cricbuzz post on social media, Jaiswal wrote, “If you don’t know what he said then please don’t make your judgment,” making it clear that he believes the context of the exchange matters. He added that if someone crosses the line, “we need to let them know,” before declaring that “this India will fight and reply.”
