The New York Yankees might not have a player in the American League MVP conversation or the AL Rookie of the Year race, but they do have Cam Schlittler making a strong case for the AL Cy Young Award.

But Dylan Cease of the Toronto Blue Jays is right behind, if not in lockstep with Schlittler, in a very tight race for the AL Cy Young.
But, according to Bradford Doolittle of ESPN, the Yankees and Schlittler got some good news, as the right-handed ace is just barely the frontrunner over Cease right now heading into the final 30 games or so of the regular season.

"Schlittler has been a steady presence atop the AXE AL Cy Young leaderboard since early in the season but, as you can see, his edge over Cease is razor-thin," Doolittle writes.
That "razor-thin" edge that Doolittle is referencing is the minute difference in AXE between the two AL East pitchers.
AXE is another measurement of a player's value, and the higher the number, the better. Schlittler right now has a 145.3 AXE according to Doolittle, while Cease is right behind him at 145.1.
Parker Messick and Drew Rasmussen, among others, aren't too far behind, but it'd take a collapse from both Cease and Schlittler and a very strong finish to the year for one of those other pitchers to win this award.

It's a two-man race right now, and it's very, very close. Schlittler vs. Cease for the AL Cy Young Award is probably going to go down to the final start of the season.
Right now, Schlittler has an 11-6 record with a 2.16 ERA and 193 strikeouts across 158 innings pitched. Cease has an 8-5 record with a 2.37 ERA and 209 strikeouts across 144.1 innings pitched.
They are very close, with Schlittler just ahead of Cease for now. But one bad start from Schlittler and this race could become even, if not in Cease's favor.
While it's good news that Schlittler has the lead over Cease, it's a very small one, and it could easily disappear with one bad start. This is going to be an entertaining race, as it's wide-open between these two pitchers as the final month of the year approaches.
