Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Villagers in Indore district carried out a symbolic ‘living funeral’ procession to pray for rain as farmers remain worried.

The incident took place in Gawli Palasia near Mhow.

A video of the ritual has surfaced on social media, showing the man lying alive and covered in white clothes as the symbolic funeral takes place.

People can be seen carrying kalash, garlands and other items used during the ritual, while villagers gather around and take part in the procession.

According to information, the villagers carried out a symbolic ‘living funeral’ procession through the village streets, with a living man lying on the bier.

The procession was taken out with drums and was joined by a large number of villagers.

Why this tradition?

According to the villagers, the tradition has been followed for many years. They believe that when rain stops for a long time, carrying out a symbolic funeral of a living person can please Lord Indra, the Hindu god associated with rain, and bring rainfall to the village.

The villagers said the lack of rain has increased worries among farmers, as crops in the fields need water and could be damaged if the dry spell continues. They said the procession was taken out to pray for good rainfall.

While some people see the practice as superstition, villagers consider it part of their faith and old tradition.

The unusual procession has now become a talking point in nearby areas, while villagers continue to wait for rain.
