Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver suffered an unimaginable loss in June when his son passed away. Tragically, the incident occurred just days before his second birthday after he was found unresponsive in the family’s pool.
The Bills organization chose not to make the tragedy public while Oliver and his family dealt with their grief.

However, a podcaster later revealed the news publicly, drawing anger from Bills star quarterback Josh Allen, who strongly criticized the decision. Allen’s stance received significant support from fans for defending his teammate’s privacy.
NFL Fans Rally Behind Josh Allen and Ed Oliver
News of Oliver’s son’s death was first shared publicly on social media by podcaster Tony Farmer before the Bills or the family made an official announcement. Before that disclosure, several beat writers and NFL insiders who were aware of the tragedy appeared to have deliberately chosen against reporting it out of respect for Oliver and his family.
Following Buffalo’s preseason matchup against the Cleveland Browns, Allen addressed the media and began his comments by discussing Oliver’s loss.
The Bills quarterback expressed gratitude to those who knew about the tragedy but respected Oliver’s privacy, while also making clear that he was deeply disappointed and angry about how the information became public.
“First off, I want to say thank you to the ones that knew about it and allowed him to have his moment and his time,” Allen said. “It’s very sad in how it came out. It makes me very sad and angry.”
Allen’s remarks quickly sparked reactions from NFL fans, as fans agreed that Oliver and his family deserved privacy while grieving the loss of their young child.
“The dude who leaked the news (who I will not name) can rot. I hope Ed finds peace and that this entire scenario reminds us that some things are simply not our business,” a fan wrote.
“Thank you to the Buffalo media for protecting Oliver’s privacy and putting human decency above breaking a story. Shame on the piece of trash who reported this and continues to post things on X about it,” another comment read.
“So heartbreaking. Thoughts to him and his family,” one person added.
Oliver and his family continue to grieve the heartbreaking loss and have asked for “privacy and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.” However, the podcaster’s decision to publicize the tragedy only added to the family’s pain.
“Even Josh Allen hates @Tonysmarkettips,” a fan added.
“Farmer got his $5 from X for breaking the “news,” and only had to trade common decency to get it. Great job, Tony. You’ll be remembered for a while for this,” one observer noted.
“Did this guy just ruin his career?” another comment read.
According to ESPN, deputies from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office responded on June 28 to a life-in-danger call involving the child. He was transported by ambulance to a Houston-area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Bills organization had been aware of Oliver’s son’s death since the time of the tragedy. General Manager Brandon Beane and the organization later publicly offered their condolences to Oliver and his family.
Despite dealing with the devastating personal loss, Oliver has continued participating in Buffalo’s training camp activities this summer. However, he did not play in their preseason game against the Browns after suffering a minor injury.
