Sean McVay Reveals Nikola Jokic is Why He No Longer Has a Get Back Coach

· Yahoo Sports

Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay has taken a different approach to his sideline conduct, and he credits NBA star Nikola Jokic as the reason.

Speaking to reporters this week, McVay was asked if he still has a “get back coach” as he did early in his tenure with the Los Angeles Rams.

McVay said he doesn’t, a change prompted by a conversation with Jokic, who plays for the Denver Nuggets, which, like the Rams, is owned by Stan Kroenke.

What is a get back coach?

For those who are unaware, football coaches are required to remain on the sidelines during play, and if they were to get in a referee’s way during the action, it would result in a penalty for their team.

McVay, though, was known for frequently leaving the allowed area, to the point that he had another member of the Rams staff, Ted Rath, follow him around and literally pull him back toward where he needed to be when McVay would wander too close to the field.

Now that he’s matured, though, McVay said he is “not that much of a dip— anymore” where he needs Rath or anyone else to hold him back.

“I’ll never forget this, this is when I thought, ‘Man, I’ve really got to reevaluate my priorities,'” McVay explained. “When Jokic won the first MVP of his career, it was when they had just finished up. They lost to the Suns. I got to the playoff game, they lost at home at Ball Arena. I go to the locker room afterwards and Nikola sees me. He says, ‘Where is your get back coach?'”

If you’re wondering, yes, McVay can do a passable Serbian accent.

He then continued with a laugh, “Golly, this is what the NBA MVP knows me as. I am a failure.”

McVay notes that he doesn’t need a get back guy anymore, but the past has a way of sticking around.

“That video will never freaking leave me, will it?”
