Why there are no Italian newspapers on August 16

Football Italia provides English translations of the daily front pages for Italy’s major sports newspapers, but this will not be possible on Sunday morning given that no papers have been published.

The most recent front page of La Gazzetta dello Sport, published on August 15, 2026.

August 15 is the celebration of Ferragosto in Italy. This is an Italian public holiday centred around the Catholic feast of the Assumption of Mary.

Ferragosto originates from the festival of Emperor Augustus, who made August 1 a public holiday to provide rest for workers after weeks of hard work in the agricultural sector.

The date of the celebration was later moved to August 15 to coincide with the Catholic celebration of the Assumption of Mary.

August 15 remains a public holiday across Italy, and this means that no newspapers will have been written on Saturday, and therefore none published on Sunday. The daily newspapers will return to normal service on Monday.
