Gauteng residents are being urged to prepare for bitterly cold weather next week, with the possibility of light snowfall in some higher-lying areas as a powerful cold front sweeps across South Africa.

According to the South African Weather Service, a cold front accompanied by a steep upper-air trough is expected to make landfall over the Western and Northern Cape on Sunday, 9 August 2026.
The system is forecast to bring cold to very cold, wet and windy conditions, rough sea conditions, and snowfall over the mountainous regions.
As the weather system moves eastwards, the adverse conditions are expected to spread to the Eastern Cape. By Monday, 10 August 2026, the upper-air trough is forecast to deepen further over the central and eastern parts of the country, resulting in widespread cold to very cold conditions.
Cold front to hit Gauteng by Tuesday
Snow is forecast over the mountainous areas of the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga. Forecasters have also indicated a low probability of light snowfall over some higher-lying areas of Gauteng.
Regional weather service Gauteng Weather also highlighted the potential for snow in the province as the cold front reaches Gauteng on Monday evening.
“Snow & heavy rain possible in Gauteng late Monday into Tuesday due to the cold snap. Only some models are picking up snow. This early forecast is subject to change, but we’re closely monitoring developments,” Gauteng Weather posted on X.
