The BMC has issued a strict one-month deadline for the removal of unauthorised ramps, platforms and other structures obstructing pedestrian pathways, directing violators to bear the cost of removal.

Failure to comply will invite demolition and stringent enforcement action. The move comes amid the BMC's renewed push to reclaim pedestrian spaces and ensure unobstructed, safe footpaths for the public.

Pedestrian First Drive Intensified

The BMC has intensified its ‘Pedestrian First’ drive to reclaim footpaths from illegal hawkers, ramps, commercial structures and other encroachments across Mumbai.

On Thursday, Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide inspected key stretches in K-West (Andheri West) and P-South (Goregaon) wards, including Swami Vivekanand Road, Ram Ganesh Gadkari Marg and areas near Goregaon station, and directed officials to immediately clear all obstructions. She stressed that the entire footpath space must be restored for safe and unhindered pedestrian movement.

As part of the campaign, the BMC’s K-West ward will reclaim around 320 km of footpaths in the first phase, with 27 of 355 roads identified for action and 37.7 km of pedestrian pathways being cleared of encroachments. Focusing on Vile Parle and Goregaon, the civic body is prioritising unobstructed movement for ambulances, patients, students and commuters.

During inspections of K-West and P-South wards, Bhide found illegal vehicle ramps, stalls and commercial structures occupying pedestrian spaces.

She directed housing societies and shop owners to remove unauthorised ramps within one month, warning that violators will face strict action under BMC rules.

Officials Warn Of Action

“Blocked footpaths force senior citizens, women, children and persons with disabilities to step onto busy roads, putting pedestrian safety at risk,” said Bhide, as the BMC intensified its drive.

Officials have been directed to remove illegal hawkers, shop extensions, unauthorised ramps and other obstructions along Ram Ganesh Gadkari Marg and Swami Vivekanand Road in Vile Parle.

Goregaon Upgrade Underway

At Goregaon West railway station's Bandu Gore Marg, Bhide ordered the relocation of commercial structures obstructing pedestrian movement and contributing to traffic congestion.

The 350-metre stretch, used by nearly 70,000 commuters daily, has already seen the removal of 43 structures, with road widening and junction improvement works underway. The BMC will also upgrade footpaths to create safer, obstruction-free pedestrian corridors.
