The San Antonio Spurs reached the NBA Finals this past season behind All-NBA center and unanimous Defensive Player of the Year Victor Wembanyama. After witnessing his rapid rise to superstardom, the Spurs wasted no time rewarding him with a massive contract extension.
The deal came at a discount, as Wembanyama was eligible to sign an extension worth more than $300 million. Instead, he accepted a smaller figure to provide San Antonio with greater financial flexibility.
Unsurprisingly, Wembanyama earned widespread praise for the decision. Recently, Spurs rising star Dylan Harper shared his thoughts on Wembanyama and his willingness to take less than the maximum extension.
“I feel like for a 22-year-old, he's probably one of the best leaders I've been around, just the way he carries himself, his maturity, from top to bottom, whether it's basketball treatment, in the weight room, personal life,” Harper said.
“I feel like he's kind of structured his life in a way that has worked for him, and I think he's the most genuine person ever. When that came out, I feel like yes, it was a surprise to everyone. But I mean, that's just the type of person he is.”
Wembanyama explained during NBA 2K27 promotional interviews that his main goal was to preserve cap space and maintain roster flexibility under the NBA's luxury tax aprons. The five-year extension keeps the French superstar under contract with San Antonio through the 2031–32 season.
The extension came after a dominant third campaign in which Wembanyama guided San Antonio to a 62-20 record. The Spurs also captured the Western Conference title and reached their first NBA Finals since 2014, though they ultimately lost to the New York Knicks.
