Texans Give C.J. Stroud a Clear Message Prior to NFL Preseason

The Houston Texans appear intent on making C.J. Stroud their quarterback of the future. That is, they intend to make Stroud their long-term quarterback if general manager Nick Caserio's comments are any indication.

Caserio shared optimism regarding Stroud's upcoming contract but also indicated that he's not too concerned about the deal getting done.

ESPN NFL analyst D.J. Bien-Aime recorded some of what Caserio discussed on the Texans' starting signal caller and the possibility of getting a deal done. Here's what Caserio added on the contract discussions.

"The Texans were more forthcoming regarding contract discussions than normal. General manager Nick Caserio said there's a 'possibility' the team and quarterback C.J. Stroud can reach a contract extension. Stroud isn't focused much on contract discussions; he's letting his agent handle it as he is 'keeping the main thing the main thing.'

Stroud is going into Year 4 and is eligible for an extension for the first time in his career. Coach DeMeco Ryans said he doesn't get into a lot of deep discussions with guys when it comes to contract situations.

But he added, 'I truly believe you get the contract by what you do on the field. It doesn't matter what you say, what I say. It's about how you perform on the field, and if you're worthy of getting a contract and you deserve it, it'll happen for you.'"

This late in the offseason, the Texans' priority has shifted to focusing on winning on the field this season rather than getting contracts done. The "main thing" to which Caserio refers is making sure that Houston puts the best possible product on the field and wins games in 2026. Contracts can distract from that mission.

The lack of a contract extension could bring the best out of Stroud. The former first round draft pick has ample motivation to leave no doubt he's worthy of leading the Texans into the next four years of winning football. It all starts with more consistency on the field.

Stroud had a down season by all accounts, but the overwhelming sample size indicates he's an NFL starter. The concern for the Texans is the trajectory of his stat trends and how he has performed in playoff losses.

Despite all the questions, the Texans have plenty to get excited about with Stroud at the helm. Among those things, two playoff appearances in three years and three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons for his top receiver Nico Collins since Stroud became the Texans' starter.

Houston and Stroud will push to have more playoff success this season.
