Torrey Pines to stay on PGA Tour schedule, become Championship stop in 2028

As expected, the La Jolla, California, stop will remain on the calendar, though under a different – albeit familiar – name beginning in 2027. The Sentry, which transitions from its former home at Kapalua, will be contested Jan. 27-30, 2027, a week after the season-opening American Express, and then become part of the Championship Series in 2028.
The PGA Tour has already announced two other Championship-level tournaments: the longstanding Travelers Championship and a new event sponsored by Sompo, which will be played in Napa, California, next summer before relocating to another market.
A complete 2028 Championship Series schedule is expected to be released in late January and include 23 to 24 events, including the majors, Players Championship, reimagined playoffs and Cup events.
This season’s Sentry at Kapalua was canceled due to ongoing drought conditions, though the PGA Tour has since scrapped its Hawaiian Swing while repurposing the Sony Open as a PGA Tour Champions event.
Next year’s Sentry will mark the PGA Tour’s 60th tournament at Torrey, which first hosted the circuit for the 1968 San Diego Open. The event had been known as the Farmers Insurance Open since 2010, when Farmers took over for Buick as title sponsor.
