Mack, Hernandez Homers but Marlins Lose 10th Straight

MIAMI — The Miami Marlins entered Friday with a 31-20 record at loanDepot park this season, but not even that could prevent the losing streak from stretching to 10 games.

A pinch-hit two-home run from Luis Rengfino in the eighth inning gave the San Diego Padres a 4-2 win over the Marlins in the series opener.
The Marlins (52-52) dropped to .500 after losing 10 straight games. The Fish are now in danger of dropping to fourth place in the National League East and are three games out of the third wild card spot.
Marlins rookie catcher Joe Mack entered Friday leading the Major Leagues with 19 caught stealings, but tonight was a night for his bat. He gave the Marlins an early 1-0 lead in the second inning with his 10th home run of the season.
The Padres rallied back to tie the game in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly that scored Manny Machado, who later singled in a run in the fifth inning to give San Diego a 2-1 lead. Machado and Ty France each collected two hits to lead the Padres at the plate.
Marlins outfielder Heriberto Hernández extended his team-leading on-base streak to a career-best 16 games when he hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game 2-2. Hernández hit .159 (10x63) in his first 22 games to start the season before being sent down to Triple-A. Since returning to the big leagues on May 7, he is batting .284 with 14 home runs.
Both teams went to the mound with their bullpens on Friday. The Padres collectively scattered nine hits with 11 strikeouts. Mason Miller, who has been the talk of the MLB Trade Deadline lately, earned his 26th save of the season with a hitless ninth inning.
Ryan Gusto started for the Marlins and 3.1 innings with one run allowed on two hits with four strikeouts. Michael Peterson came in to end the sixth inning with two outs. He has held opponents scoreless in 11 of his last 13 outings. Tyler Zuber was charged with the loss after giving up the home run.
Marlins shortstop Xavier Edwards went 2-for-4 with a double to extend his home hitting streak to 11 games. He has gone 16-for-41 (.380) since June 21.
Marlins shortstop Otto Lopez went 1-for-5 and saw his batting average drop slightly to .330 on the season. The NL All-Star still leads all of MLB in batting average and hits with 132.
Eury Perez (5-7, 3.53 ERA) will take the mound for the Marlins on Saturday against JP Sears (2-3, 4.38 ERA) and the Padres.
