The already slim postseason chances for the Detroit Red Wings took another significant blow on Thursday, as the club's fifth-leading scorer from last season officially departed.
Future Hall of Fame forward Patrick Kane, who had been with the club since December 2023, decided against what would have been a third straight full season in Detroit and returned to the Chicago Blackhawks.
One of the iconic figures in Windy City Sports, Kane helped lead the Blackhawks to the Stanley Cup three times in 2010, 2013 and 2015. He's now back with the team, signing a two-year deal worth $8 million per season.
Not only is this a significant blow to the Red Wings, as Kane had been scoring at nearly a point-per-game pace last season, but this also raises serious questions about Alex DeBrincat's future in the Motor City.
DeBrincat, who played with Kane in Chicago, played a huge role in bringing him to Detroit in late 2023. Kane also sounded open to another extension in Detroit, but in the wake of Dylan Larkin's trade request, along with GM Steve Yzerman stepping down, he evidently decided it was best that he finish his career where it began.
Meanwhile, DeBrincat, who tied a career-best with 41 goals last season, is entering the final year of his current contract. He's eligible for an extension, but there hadn't been any reports of ongoing extension talks prior to Yzerman vacating his role.

DeBrincat hails from metro-Detroit and wanted a chance to play for his hometown team, facilitating a trade in the summer of 2023 from the Ottawa Senators.
He's been one of Detroit's most consistent offensive threats, though during this time, the Red Wings have not once qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Kane's departure not only leaves a glaring hole in Detroit's top-six, but now, one wonders if DeBrincat could begin considering whether the grass is greener in another location.
