Your next car licence renewal could happen at the Post Office. After years of decline under Business Rescue, the Post Office announced it is upgrading its payment systems and adding a whole raft of new capabilities, too.

You probably forgot that the Post Office has as many as 650 branches around South Africa. Nevertheless, the return of car licence renewal capability follows a test run at 40 Gauteng branches since May 2026. That test worked well, so the Post Office is now rolling it out nationwide. If not up and running already, smaller branches will get the same upgrade sonn.

CAR LICENCE RENEWAL

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the South African Post Office (SAPO) was one of the most efficient was for car licence renewal. However, since then, NATIS has become the defacto government portal. Meanwhile, countless retailers and banks offer the same service for a small fee.

Nevertheless, according to a release from SAPO, participating branches are getting new card machines with updated till software. This means you can still transact in cash, or you can tap your card, insert your card and use your PIN, or pay with a smartphone’s digital wallet. The old machines were outdated and often broke down. The new ones should be more reliable and more securely connected to other government departments.

You’ll also be able to use these machines to pay for car licence renewal, traffic fines, post office services and municipal bills. The software behind the scenes is also being improved, to protect against hacking and keep the systems running smoothly with fewer breakdowns. The Post Office has struggled for years, losing customers to private courier and payment companies. But many South Africans, especially in rural areas, have no other option and still rely on the government entity.

The organisation recently came out of Business Rescue, a legal process for companies in serious financial trouble. To get there, it cut thousands of jobs, closed hundreds of branches, and asked creditors to accept less money than they were owed. While it has been a long slog, finances are improving. Revenue rose slightly to R1.54 billion for the financial year ending March 2026. Its net loss dropped sharply, too, from R514 million the year before to R71 million, its smallest loss in years.
