A boxer on the rise has been killed in an alleged road-rage incident in Texas.

Hannah Rapp, 26, was cycling near the community of Navasota, Texas, just before 10 a.m. on Saturday when deputies found her lying in the road while responding to the scene after a woman was reported to be struck, the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office said.

Details from the scene

“First responders arrived on scene and provided emergency medical care before the victim was transported to a local hospital,” where she later died, police said in a news release .

Investigators discovered that Rapp and another cyclist were on the road when the driver of the vehicle, identified as 31-year-old Charles Medina, had passed them along two bicyclists traveling along the stretch of road, about 160 km northwest of Houston.

Medina then stopped his vehicle, reversed and struck Rapp, police said.

He was arrested and charged with manslaughter and is being held at the Brazos County Detention Center.

The investigation is ongoing as detectives continue gathering evidence and review information.

‘Invaluable member of our boxing family’

Rapp moved from her native Indiana to the Bryan-College Station area of Texas in 2024, KBTX previously reported.

She had been boxing for less than five years and balanced training with her job as a fire and life safety inspector at Texas A&M.

The athlete was making her mark in the sport, even challenging for the WBC women’s featherweight championship last month, ESPN reported.

“The loss of Hannah Rapp leaves us heartbroken,” WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said in a statement, per the outlet.

“She was an exceptional boxer, but above all, an invaluable member of our boxing family,” Sulaiman continued. “We join in the grief that overwhelms her loved ones, her team, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and supporting her throughout her brilliant career.”

The World Boxing Association also shared a tribute to Rapp on X.

Last dance

Her record was 8-0-1 before she was defeated with a unanimous decision by Tiara Brown for the women’s featherweight title at MVPW-04 on June 13 at Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando.

In an emotional Instagram post from Most Valuable Promotions that paid tribute to Rapp, Brown called her “the best dance partner I have ever faced as a pro.”

She added: “When she asked for my autograph, it filled my heart because we were getting ready for war, yet she was still asking for my autograph. It made me smile, we fought a GREAT fight for the fans from the 1st bell to the last! It was my honor to share the ring with her.”
