Man faces gun charges after asking cops for 50 cents in North York

A 20-year-old man was allegedly caught with a loaded handgun after asking cops for spare change in North York last week.
Toronto police say members of the 31 Division Neighbourhood Community Officer team were on uniform patrol near Jane St. and Shoreham Dr. – south of Steeles Ave. W. – when they allegedly encountered the accused on July 13.
“It is alleged that the accused walked up to the officers who were in their marked police vehicle,” police claim in a statement released Friday. “The accused asked the officers for 50 cents and then walked to a nearby restaurant.”
Police said the officers recognized the accused as someone who was wanted on two outstanding warrants in Toronto.
“Officers arrested the accused and located a handgun loaded with 16 rounds, which he had concealed on him,” police allege.
Officers from the 31 Division Major Crime Unit then executed a Criminal Code search warrant at an apartment in the Jane St. and Driftwood Ave. area.
More ammo, master vehicle key, stolen licence plate seized
During the search, police allege officers located and seized 26 rounds of ammunition, a master vehicle key and a stolen Ontario licence plate.
Theron Sutherland, of Toronto, was arrested.
He is charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm; possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm; careless storage of a firearm, weapon, or prohibited device; possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized; carrying a concealed weapon; three counts of possession of a prohibited device or ammunition knowing its possession is unauthorized; possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000; and unlawfully possessing an automobile master key.
