Barcola feels like a modern Liverpool attacker, quick, fearless and capable of making something happen out of very little. If the club truly see him as a cornerstone signing, then you can understand why they would push hard.
There is, of course, a gulp attached to £128m. That is serious money, even in a summer where fees seem to have lost all contact with reality. Supporters will ask whether one player is worth that much when a squad often needs depth as much as glamour. That is a fair concern.
But elite forwards cost elite money, and Liverpool cannot afford to drift while rivals collect the best young talent in Europe. If Barcola wants the move, if he fits the system, and if the coaching staff believe he can become one of the most dangerous wide players in the game, then this is the kind of swing a top club has to consider.
Hope, in the end, is built on the idea that Liverpool still move for the best, not the safest. Barcola would be a statement. A costly one, yes, but a statement all the same.
