P.J. Thompson's promotion to Purdue men's basketball associate head coach came with a healthy raise.

Thompson will make $600,000 annually, per the salary listings for 2026-27 released by the university. He previously made $400,000. The Boilermakers announced his promotion in April.

Raises tend to accompany promotions, but they often also reflect the interest other programs show in a coach. Thompson has turned down several opportunities in recent years. The Brebeuf grad and former Boilermaker point guard has risen quickly since returning from his brief pro career in 2019 as a graduate assistant.

He coordinates the offense, which last season posted the best adjusted efficiency score in the history of KenPom's metrics. He also was instrumental in the development of current Pacers point guard Braden Smith, who graduated as the NCAA's all-time assists leader.

Among the rest of Matt Painter's staff, Paul Lusk received a raise from $475,000 to $525,000. Another veteran assistant, Brandon Brantley, bumped from $500,000 to $525,000. Sasha Stefanovic's pay increased from $150,000 to $200,000. First-year assistant Kenneth Lowe will also make $200,000.

That brings the total assistant coach payroll to $2.05 million, up from $1.85 million. The university has not yet released other new contract details for any of those assistants except for Lowe.

Painter is scheduled to make $4.325 million in base salary, a $300,000 in supplemental retirement contribution and a $300,000 life insurance premium. He is also due a $250,000 retention bonus if still employed on Sept. 1. That would total $5.175 million.
