NFL insider casts doubt on Commanders' pursuit of Stefon Diggs
· Yahoo Sports
We've reached the middle of July, and some NFL teams will begin training camp this week. The defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks open camp on July 17. The Washington Commanders' rookies are scheduled to report on July 24, with veterans reporting on July 28. The first day of practice is set for July 29.
Much of the talk surrounding the Commanders in recent months has focused on what they will do at wide receiver. Will GM Adam Peters add another veteran? Obviously, two names have stood out the most: Brandon Aiyuk and Stefon Diggs.

Aiyuk appears less likely than ever due to his behavior on social media and him remaining under contract with the San Francisco 49ers. Diggs is free to sign, but remains available. ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler offered an update on Diggs, linking some interest from the Commanders.
"I'm hearing he is going to have a market closer to training camp," Fowler said. "I was told that at least five teams that need a receiver have been checking in. Now they gotta deal with some of the baggage and headlines; they are what they are. But here's why Stefon Diggs, I'm told, is confident. He had 1,000-plus yards last year, really playing on a snap count of around 55% of the snaps coming off an ACL. He feels he's going to be better this time around. I'm looking to the DMV; that's where he's from. The Commanders certainly need a receiver. I think they're looking for more of a speed option at this point; we'll see. There's several veterans they could look at."
Of those five teams, Fowler mentioned the Commanders and Ravens, both of which are close to Diggs' hometown in Maryland.
What stood out here? Fowler noted that he believed the Commanders were looking for more of a speed option. That's not really Diggs at this point. That's not calling Diggs slow, but it sounds like Fowler believes Washington is looking for more of a field-stretcher.
That description fits Tyreek Hill, but he doesn't appear to be a fit for Washington. For one, he's 32 and coming off a major knee injury, which included a dislocated left knee and multiple torn ligaments, including an ACL.
Last year, the Commanders signed edge rusher Von Miller right before training camp opened. If they're interested in a receiver, they could do something similar in 2026. However, Peters may be content to wait things out until closer to the end of the preseason.
