Google, Pele Brand Reconstruct Legendary 1959 Lost Goal

Google and the Pele Brand, managed by NR Sports, have launched a mini documentary, The Most Beautiful Goal Never Seen, detailing Google DeepMind reconstructed Pele's legendary 1959 "Gol da Rua Javari," known as his "most beautiful goal that was never actually captured on film."

Using artificial intelligence (AI) in Gemini, Google DeepMind used advanced AI models like Veo 3 and Gemini Omni to transform decades-old memories and historical fragments into moving images.
In collaboration with his family, historians, sports journalists and football legends, Google used DeepMind technology to reconstruct this piece of football history. The work was created in partnership with the Pele Brand, the official managers of his estate, preserved by NR Sports.

Pele scored the goal on August 2, 1959, in what people describe as the "most beautiful goal of his career: three consecutive 'sombreros' over defenders and the goalkeeper without the ball ever touching the ground."
The moment, however, was never captured on film, although the goal lives on in the memories of fans who were
there.
To reconstruct history, Brazilian historian Anita Lucchesi and her team gathered nearly 2,000 historical records consisting of blueprints and family albums.
They interviewed eyewitnesses, journalists and the Mooca community, using a scale model of the stadium, archival photographs and diagrams to help those who saw the goal reconstruct it from memory.
Google described how the team recreated the goal using advanced AI models Veo, Gemini Omni and Nano Banana Pro. The crew shot live-action footage on the grass of the Rua Javari stadium, using heavy leather balls and uniforms that were accurate for that period. Images of the physical surroundings were fed into the Google models, with the team focusing on three core technical experiments.
The focus was on accurately mapping Pele's likeness and classic number 10 kit onto a modern stunt player, transforming the modern stadium to match the cloudy weather and architecture of that specific day, and showing how fans watching the match at the stadium and listening to the radio broadcast at home experienced the moment.
Pele is the nickname of Edson Arantes do Nascimento, a world-renowned Brazilian soccer player who is widely regarded as one of the greatest football players in history.
During his career, he pioneered corporate sponsorships, endorsing major companies like Puma, Visa, and Mastercard, according to a search on Google AI Mode. The sponsorships laid the foundation for the Pele Brand.
The mini documentary, created to preserve the soccer player's legacy, will live at the Pele Museum beginning later this year.
