NFL analyst predicts Falcons QB will be team's biggest bust

The Atlanta Falcons are one of the NFL's biggest enigmas going into the 2026 season. While no one can doubt their talent, especially at the skill positions, there's also no consensus whatsoever as to how far they'll go this year.

If Atlanta finally gets a strong year at the quarterback position, then the sky could be the limit.

However, if the Falcons continue to get failing grades at quarterback then another 8-9 season is probably the best that they can hope for, despite playing in the league's weakest division.

Most analysts seem to be betting against the latter scenario. That includes Moe Moton at Bleacher Report, who's predicting that Michael Penix Jr. will be the team's biggest bust this year.

"By default, Tagovailoa has the upper hand in this battle heading into training camp. As the Falcons' starter from the previous two seasons, Penix doesn't have the advantage of being the incumbent under a new coaching staff. By the start of the preseason, Tagovailoa may be in pole position for the lead role. Even if Penix wins the competition, his spotty 59.6 percent completion rate could eventually cost him the job. Tagovailoa has a career 68 percent completion rate."

It's difficult to deny that Penix's accuracy has been an issue at the pro level (although his completion rate slightly improved last season). His decision-making is arguably the bigger issue, though. When Penix is comfortable, he can put the ball right on the money with velocity and timing.

However, he didn't look very comfortable operating almost exclusively out of the pistol last season. The Falcons had several issues under former OC Zac Robinson, and while Penix deserves some of the blame, the team could have put him in better situations.

Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski is the right guy to get the most out of Penix, but the third-year quarterback needs to get healthy first.
