UT Martin transfer gets the keys to USI offense

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – When the University of Southern Indiana men’s basketball team searched the transfer portal to fill out their roster, a familiar name stuck out that head coach Stan Gouard personally wanted the challenge to recruit the player.

UT Martin transfer, Afin Trnka knows his upcoming road game at his former school won’t be pleasant when they see him suited up for an Ohio Valley Conference foe.

“There’s going to be some animosity when I go back to UT Martin, but I like it that way,” he said. “I’m ready.”

Trnka has been a pain in the side for the Screaming Eagles for two years now, so when Gouard saw he was available he took the risk to call Trnka himself.

“I went back and I looked at those scouting reports and I remembered he sat out one game because he was injured. I was the happiest guy, because I think he’s an assassin offensively. Not just his scoring but his passing and his leadership. And when he hit the portal man I was, you know I got involved with that one. I called him myself,” said Gouard.

With his senior season ahead of him, Trnka decided to accept the offer from a familiar place, but more importantly a place where he was wanted.

He said, “I really enjoyed coming here, I really liked the facility and everything. And when I entered the portal, coach reached out and immediately seemed like he really wanted me. And I wanted to go where I felt wanted.”

Since starting offseason workouts Trnka said he’s been given the keys to the USI offense that’s bolstered with size and capable shooters on the wings.
