The USMNT crashed out of the 2026 World Cup on home soil in thoroughly demoralizing fashion, losing 4-1 to Belgium in a game where it seemed totally overwhelmed by the moment.
Many of the team's best players are in their mid- to late-20s, meaning they should be around in four years. But it also means that injuries or natural regression might see them fall off the pace as they enter their 30s. That's why the development of some of the USMNT's most promising prospects will be vital over the next few years.
Predicting a World Cup starting lineup four years ahead of time is, quite obviously, a difficult thing to do. To choose just one example: Who would have guessed Tim Ream would be the bedrock of the team's 2026 back line after he played his first World Cup in 2022 at age 35?
But let's give it a shot anyway! Here's who we see starting for the USMNT at the 2030 World Cup:
Goalkeeper: Chris Brady
In the mix: Matt Freese, Matt Turner, Patrick Schulte, Julian Eyestone, Diego Kochen, Gavin Beavers, Gabriel Slonina
Brady surged onto the World Cup roster with some excellent performances in MLS with the Chicago Fire. His first USMNT cap against Senegal didn't go as planned, but Brady is on an upward trajectory and at 22, he still has plenty of room to grow. Though goalkeeper has been a weak spot in recent years, there is a promising young crop of keepers who could emerge moving forward including Kochen, Beavers and Eyestone.
Right back: Alex Freeman
In the mix: Sergino Dest, Joe Scally
Dest has already been the starter at two World Cups and will still be only 29 by the time 2030 rolls around. But his disastrous display against Belgium shows there should be some competition at the position. Freeman will be a cornerstone of this team moving forward. The main question is whether he'll move out to his natural right back spot or continue to occupy a more central role like he did at the World Cup.
Center back: Chris Richards, Noahkai Banks
In the mix: Auston Trusty, Mark McKenzie, Christopher Cupps, Neil Pierre, Ian James, Josh Wynder,
Richards will be 30 by the time the next World Cup rolls around, which should be young enough for him to maintain his spot given how much superior he is to the rest of the center back pool right now.
As for Banks, let's pencil him in with our fingers crossed. The 19-year-old may have been on the USMNT roster for this World Cup were it not for his flirtation with Germany. One of the biggest priorities moving forward for U.S. Soccer has to be locking the Augsburg center back down. If he's committed, he's an easy favorite to start in 2030.
Cupps, Pierre and James are three of the top center back prospects on the horizon for the USMNT, which will desperately hoping at least one fulfills his potential.
Left back: Peyton Miller
In the mix: Antonee Robinson, Max Arfsten, John Tolkin, Luca Bombino, Prince Forfor
Miller is a player USMNT fans should be excited about, and will surely be making his senior debut sooner rather than later. The 18-year-old has already been a MLS starter with the Revolution for two years. He is already physically able to excel at the MLS level and appears in line for a European move soon.
Robinson will be 32 at the next World Cup, which may be a difficult age for a player who's struggled with injuries recently and is so reliant on his physical tools. Bombino is developing nicely in MLS with San Diego FC, while 17-year-old Forfor has an extremely high ceiling.
Center midfield: Adri Mehmedi, Malik Tillman, Weston McKennie
In the mix: Tyler Adams, Johnny Cardoso, Tanner Tessmann, Sebastian Berhalter, Gianluca Busio, Aidan Morris, Jack McGlynn, Kaedren Spivey, Taha Habroune, Jude Terry
Tillman excelled in a deeper role during this World Cup, which is where his future may lie for club and country. McKennie will be 31 at the next World Cup and shows little sign of slowing down. Mehmedi has taken MLS by storm this year as a 17-year-old and looks like one of the best holding midfield prospects the U.S. has seen in some time.
Adams is a tough omission from the lineup but he'll be 31 at the next World Cup and his injury history makes him a question mark. There should be a great battle moving forward between Cardoso, Tessmann, Busio, Morris and McGlynn, all of whom missed the 2026 roster. Between top prospects Spivey, Habroune and Terry, at least one should be in the World Cup roster mix in four years.
Attacking midfield/wingers: Christian Pulisic, Zavier Gozo
In the mix: Gio Reyna, Diego Luna, Brenden Aaronson, Tim Weah, Mathis Albert, Cavan Sullivan, Nimfasha Berchimas
Pulisic had a disappointing World Cup in 2026. He'll be 31 next time around and may be close enough to his peak still to give it another go. Gozo will be right at his peak at age 23. The Real Salt Lake winger looks like the real deal and made a serious late push for the roster this year at 19.
Albert and Sullivan may well be taking Pulisic's starting role if either player continues at their current trajectory. Both 2009-born players are already making the jump to the senior level, with Sullivan a regular at the Philadelphia Union and Albert breaking through at Borussia Dortmund.
Forward: Folarin Balogun
In the mix: Ricardo Pepi, Patrick Agyemang, Josh Sargent, Julian Hall, Malik Jakupovic, Justin Ellis
Balogun arrived at the 2026 World Cup, becoming an unquestioned star for the USMNT while scoring three goals. He's the clear favorite to start in four years, when he'll be 29.
Pepi didn't make much of an impact at the World Cup, but a move to a top-five European league seems likely for the PSV striker, who will still be only 27 in four years.
Hall looks like the best forward prospect the U.S. has at the moment, with the 18-year-old already near the top of the MLS scoring leaderboard in 2026. But Jakupovic and Ellis are also teenagers starting to find their feet in MLS.
