Jalen Reed sticks with Michigan despite coaching change

Last offseason cycle, former Michigan basketball head coach Dusty May took on a transfer cast of talented players who were unproven, and he was rewarded with the program's second national championship. Before leaving for the NBA, May attempted to do the same thing, this time bringing in a mix of talented players who were proven, as well as some who perhaps needed some new scenery.

Among them was former LSU forward Jalen Reed, the former four-star rated No. 71 overall by the 247Sports Composite, who had a rocky go of it in Baton Rouge due to injuries shortening his past two seasons. Reed came to Ann Arbor hoping to rehabilitate and play for May; however, with May leaving the program, his future required some reassessment. However, on Friday, he revealed that he plans to see his transfer through, reaffirming his commitment to the maize and blue.

Given that Reed is rehabbing a ruptured Achilles, it's uncertain when he'll be ready to take the court. Even so, when he was brought in, May spoke about his addition back in April.

"Right now, obviously, you know all the risk and the give and take with everyone that you sign," May said. "But with Jalen, we felt like if he can get back to full strength and healthy, he's a really good basketball player. We're also gonna be very patient with him and his timetable to make sure he's back, ready to go. We also have a lot of faith in our sports science department and Matt and Chris to invest the time and the professional expertise that they have to get him back to playing at the level he's playing at. We thought he was a very, very good take because he could certainly outperform his expectations if he's healthy. And if he's not as healthy as early as we'd hope, then we'll have the depth to overcome that. But he's a talented young man and a great human being."

Reed joins Moustapha Thiam and JP Estrella as transfers who have opted to remain with the program, with multiple recruits having shared their intentions to do the same.
