- Weight: 224 lbs
- Recruiting rank: Three-star recruit, no. 124 QB nationally in 2022
- Hometown: Little Elm, Texas
- Games watched: Michigan, Texas, Tennessee, Alabama, LSU
Strengths:
- Plus arm
- Brings significant upside as a playmaker
- Can make almost every tight window throw
- Pre-thumb injury was showing positive development in accuracy
Weaknesses:
- Gunslinger mentality for better or for worse (11 interceptions last season)
- Post-thumb surgery accuracy took a major hit
- How has his recovery gone outside football?
- Struggled against the biggest teams
- Can push the ball down the field, struggles with placement
John Mateer will fit in today's NFL, but unless the accuracy takes a major step in 2026, he is all but guaranteed to land on day three. I have Mateer as a fifth-round pick, and he could prove to be important in camp as a scout team quarterback, and that is how he sticks around.
