Ravens pass rusher Mike Green tests himself against a sumo wrestler
· Yahoo Sports
The NFL calendar can feel painfully slow this time of year. Baltimore Ravens rookies won't report to training camp until July 24, while veterans won't arrive until July 28. Until then, players are left to find creative ways to stay in shape, and fans are left counting down the days until football finally returns.
Mike Green gave everyone something to watch in the meantime. The Ravens' second-year edge rusher recently shared a video on Instagram showing himself squaring off against a sumo wrestler. It's certainly not the type of offseason workout fans see every day, and it didn't take long for the clip to begin making the rounds on social media.

Mike Green found a different kind of offseason challenge
No, the Ravens aren't expected to line Green up against any sumo wrestlers this fall. Still, there may be more overlap than meets the eye. Success for pass rushers often comes down to leverage, balance, hand placement, lower-body strength, and learning how to move powerful opponents. Those are all qualities emphasized in wrestling disciplines, even if the techniques don't perfectly translate to chasing quarterbacks on Sundays.
At the very least, Green deserves points for thinking outside the box. Most players spend this portion of the offseason lifting weights, working through position drills, or training with private coaches. Green apparently decided to add a sumo wrestler to the mix.
Ravens training camp can't arrive soon enough
Football fans know this stretch of the calendar well. The NBA has crowned its champion. Baseball dominates the daily sports headlines. The FIFA World Cup knockout stage is helping bridge the gap, but nothing truly replaces NFL football.
That's why videos like Green's generate so much attention. Will wrestling a sumo athlete translate into more sacks this season? Probably not by itself. But it does offer another glimpse into a young player who's clearly looking for different ways to challenge himself before training camp begins.
The real tests start later this month, when Green trades the sumo ring for the practice field and begins preparing for another season in Baltimore's defense.
