We’re under a week from the transfer window officially opening but smart teams are already lining up their moves and so is Fiorentina. We’ve heard rumblings over the past week or two that Fabio Paratici has found a new defender and various outlets are confirming that it’s Grêmio’s Viery. The Viola will shell out €15 million for the 21-year-old defender (with some potential bonus payments depending on performance) and sign him to a 5-year contract.

Viery’s every bit the modern centerback. He’s big and strong but also very quick, which enables him to either pursue forwards very high up or sweep up behind. He can slip passes through the lines or float them into the channels with either foot. He’s got a good mindset, too, constantly imposing himself on opponents and defending proactively. That’s the on-pitch personality a defender needs, even when it leads to mistakes.

And Viery does make mistakes. The optimistic way to look at it is that he’s young and still figuring it out but has all the tools. These little wobbles are part of the growth process, especially for defenders. I haven’t watched enough of Viery to have a really strong opinion but I’ve noticed two small flaws in his game. He’s not as good in the air as his size would suggest and he’s too eager going into tackles at times, to the point that I worry about his availability at times with the number of cards he could pick up, although he’s managed to avoid too many bookings.

It’s not hard to see Paratici’s vision. Viery would partner Pietro Comuzzo in the heart of the Viola defense for the next few seasons, forming a young and physically imposing pairing. I think they could complement each other well and give Fabio Grosso a foundation from which to build his house. The Brazilian would also fit with Luca Ranieri as he seems comfortable on either side of a pair if the ex-captain sticks in Florence.

There’s never any way to know how a transfer will go from the outside. There are so many factors at play that our puny little brains can’t process even a fraction. The buzz from people in the know, though, seems to be that this is a reasonable price for a talented player who should fit right in. He’s probably not a club-altering addition but for the first move of the Paratici era, Viery’s not a bad option.
