Jonah Coleman made a good early impression with Broncos

As the Denver Broncos head into a summer break, the team's backfield will be a key storyline to watch when training camp begins in July.

J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey are back, and the team used a fourth-round draft pick to select Washington's Jonah Coleman in April. Coleman joins Tyler Badie and Jaleel McLaughlin competing for the No. 3 running back spot. It's very early, but Coleman's stock seems to be trending up.

“Good," Broncos coach Sean Payton said when asked about his early impression of Coleman earlier this month. "He had a good rookie camp. He’s put together well. There are some positions, I think, that are a little bit more difficult to evaluate [this time of year]. Ultimately, with him as a runner, they have to tackle you, but he’s all football.”

Denver's coaches didn't see Coleman breaking any tackles this spring — that kind of contact won't arrive until training camp and preseason — but he has the size, agility, smarts and blocking ability to make a strong early impression. The real test will arrive when the pads come on, but it's been so far, so good for Coleman.
