There seem to be three guaranteed untouchables for the San Antonio Spurs, with Victor Wembanyama being the most obvious one. Unless a team was going to sell their franchise to the Spurs for Wembanyama, and even then, I don't think it'll happen, there's just no chance the Spurs would ever move on from him, unless we see a Luka Doncic situation times 10.
Regarding Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, I don't think the Spurs would make that move, but perhaps a team around the league would get so desperate they'd offer the Spurs something they simply can't refuse.
However, it's safe to say none of this will happen, and those are the three untouchables.
At the same time, the Spurs still need to improve, which is why they've been linked to Jaylen Brown.
The Brown acquisition might not cost them Castle, Harper or Wembanyama, but it could require them moving on from other very good players, with a CBS reporter recently naming two guys who could be in that deal.
“That sort of upgrade would be costly for the Spurs. San Antonio is loaded with tradable draft capital, including a 2028 swap with Boston that they could retract. While Castle and Harper would surely be off the table, maybe other younger players like Carter Bryant or Julian Champagnie would be gettable. Fox is certainly a bad contract in a vacuum, but he might actually make some sense for the Celtics specifically. He doesn't pressure the rim at nearly the rate that he used to, but he's still above average on that front and would likely do well in an environment with the sort of shooting that Boston can offer,” Sam Quinn wrote.
I understand the idea here for the Spurs, but I also think it's important to recognize that a trade takes two teams to happen.
I don't think the Celtics would accept a trade that doesn't involve at least one of Castle or Harper for a guy who just won Finals MVP. I don't think people realize how good Brown is at basketball at times, so that's something that just has to be put in the back of people's minds.
