PowerBall jackpot winner bought ticket at Boxer, turns R30 into R128.5 million

· The South African

A resident of Ndwedwe, north of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, has become the first-ever PowerBall jackpot winner under South Africa’s new National Lottery operator, Sizekhaya, after scooping an incredible R128 million prize.

The life-changing win came from a modest R30 ticket purchased at a Boxer store in the iLembe District for the PowerBall draw held on Tuesday, 2 June 2026.

Manually selected numbers

The winner manually selected his numbers, choosing a combination based on important dates and personal milestones in his life.

Those sentimental numbers ultimately delivered one of the biggest lottery prizes of the year.

Like millions of South Africans, he watched the live PowerBall draw on e.tv, unaware that his life was about to change forever.

“I could hardly believe what I was seeing,” he recalled.

“As each number appeared, I became more and more convinced that something extraordinary was happening. When the final numbers were drawn, I was overwhelmed with disbelief.”

A dream 15 years in the making

Despite the excitement, the winner waited until the following day to verify his ticket at an authorised Sizekhaya retailer.

A regular participant in National Lottery games for more than 15 years, he never imagined he would one day become a multi-millionaire.

The confirmation transformed what had long been a dream into reality, opening the door to opportunities worth R128 million.

Building a better future

The winner said the jackpot would allow him to provide greater security and stability for his family after experiencing lengthy periods of unemployment.

Among his first priorities are home improvements and creating a more comfortable living environment for his loved ones.

“This win means everything to me and my family,” he said.

“It gives us an opportunity to build a better future and create lasting opportunities for generations to come.”

Support for jackpot winners

Sizekhaya has confirmed that all major jackpot winners will have access to Extended Support Services, including professional trauma counselling and financial advisory assistance.

The initiative is designed to help winners navigate the challenges that often accompany sudden wealth and to ensure they make informed decisions about their finances.

A spokesperson for Sizekhaya described the historic win as a significant milestone for the new lottery operator.

“We are delighted for our winner and his family,” the spokesperson said.

“Beyond the excitement of winning, we are committed to ensuring that winners receive the support, guidance and education necessary to navigate this life-changing experience successfully.”

The spokesperson added that the lottery has the power to transform not only individual lives but entire families and future generations.

For one Ndwedwe resident, a simple R30 ticket has done exactly that, turning years of hope into a R128 million reality.

The unnamed player walked away R128 593 394.50 richer after correctly predicting the five numbers drawn as well as the PowerBall bonus ball.

Those numbers were 2, 10, 22, 28 and 49.

Meanwhile, the bonus ball was 7.
