The New England Patriots released Stefon Diggs earlier this offseason, but have not completely slammed the door shut on bringing him back.

Diggs was a 1,000-yard receiver with the Patriots and proved he can still contribute after tearing his ACL in 2024. He led the team in yards, receptions and targets, but the Patriots still decided to move on. They signed Romeo Doubs in free agency and traded for A.J. Brown. It's hard to argue that the receiver room is not better right now than it was last season.
The Patriots seem unlikely to re-sign Diggs, but there is one scenario where it would make sense. If Brown or Doubs were to suffer an injury before the season, signing Diggs would actually be ideal. He knows the offense, has a rapport with Drake Maye and seemingly enjoyed his time with the Patriots.
Losing Doubs or Brown would be a huge blow, and going into the season with Super Bowl expectations, the Patriots are unlikely to simply trust their depth and young receivers to make up for the loss of a major offseason acquisition. The reality is, they felt the receiving corps last season was not good enough, so they made two major additions.
Earlier in the offseason, Eliot Wolf noted that he won't rule out adding Diggs, specifically noting that injuries happen, and he does not shut the door on Diggs.
"I never like to rule anything out," Wolf said on "Up & Adams" in March. There's always different scenarios that come up, whether you have an injury or a scheme shift or whatever the case may be, so don't want to close the door on anything."
This late in the offseason, a player like Diggs would make the most sense for the Patriots. He would be the easiest to catch up to speed and would be cheap.
