SWR Fully Prepared for Monsoon 2026 with Enhanced Safety Measures
· Free Press Journal

Keeping passenger safety and uninterrupted train operations as its top priority, South Western Railway has implemented comprehensive monsoon preparedness measures across its network to effectively address seasonal challenges.
The Monsoon Period for 2026 is observed from 1st June to 31st October across most sections of SWR. However, in select sections of Bengaluru and Mysuru Divisions, the notified period extends from mid-August/early September to mid-November based on local weather conditions. During this time, extensive precautionary protocols are in place to ensure safe and reliable train operations.

To strengthen bridge safety, Water Level Monitoring Instruments (WLMIs) have been installed at 15 critical bridge locations identified based on past flood history. These systems provide real-time water level data and generate automated daily SMS alerts to officials, enabling timely preventive action.
A total of 48 Road Under Bridges (RUBs) prone to waterlogging have been identified. Measures such as desilting, installation of flood gauge indicators, warning signage, and round-the-clock monitoring have been implemented. Select RUBs are also equipped with CCTV surveillance on a trial basis, while real-time monitoring is carried out through the Bridge Management System (BMS).To monitor high wind conditions, an anemometer has been installed near Sagarakatte on the Mysuru–Arasikere section for continuous wind velocity assessment.
SWR has established a robust communication system to respond to adverse weather. The Central Control Office at Hubballi receives alerts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which are promptly disseminated to field officials for timely action. Additionally, rainfall data from 52 gauge stations is monitored daily. For emergency preparedness, monsoon reserve materials such as boulders and sandbags are strategically positioned at seven key locations across Hubballi and Mysuru Divisions. Machinery including excavators and compressors are also kept ready at critical points for swift restoration works.
Engineering measures including soil nailing, boulder netting, turf reinforcement, trimming of tree branches and construction of protective structures such as retaining walls and gabion walls have been undertaken to enhance slope stability. Tunnel portal extensions have been carried out in vulnerable ghat sections to prevent falling debris. Drainage systems, including side drains and catch-water drains, have been thoroughly cleaned.
Monsoon patrolling has been intensified, with watchmen deployed at vulnerable locations. Joint inspections of nearby water bodies have been conducted with local authorities to mitigate risks from potential breaches or sudden water releases. To ensure rapid response in case of emergencies, fully equipped Auxiliary Medical Relief Trains and Self-Propelled Accident Relief Trains are stationed strategically across all divisions.
These proactive and coordinated measures underscore SWR’s commitment to safeguarding passengers, protecting infrastructure, and ensuring seamless train operations throughout the monsoon season.
