Angel Reese puts the WNBA on notice — the Dream are just getting started

The Atlanta Dream came into Monday night’s home matchup against the Toronto Tempo riding a three-game win streak. The run started June 14 with a commanding 102-77 win over the Tempo in Toronto. Then came back-to-back battles against the Indiana Fever, first a tough 108-101 fight in Atlanta and then a 113-96 blowout on Saturday, setting a franchise-record in scoring.

Rhyne Howard led the way with 24 points, Allisha Gray added 22, Naz Hillmon chipped in 19, and Jordin Canada dropped a near double-double with 12 points, 12 assists, and seven rebounds. Angel Reese, meanwhile, finished with 18 points and eight rebounds, setting a WNBA record in the process to become the fastest player to 1,000 career rebounds.

The win pushed Atlanta to 11-4 on the season, good for first place in the Eastern Conference with a .733 winning percentage. Only the Minnesota Lynx (13-4) have a better record in the entire league.

And according to Reese, you haven’t seen anything yet.

“I mean, in June, we looked so great. I’m just wondering what it would look like in October and in September,” Reese told SportsCenter’s Keiana Martin. “I mean, we don’t even have Brionna Jones back in. We’ve done such a great job. All five starters are averaging double figures. And then our bench is also so great. Karl (Smesko) is an amazing coach, and the fans here are amazing. So I don’t know how much better it’s gonna look, but I’m excited for what it’s gonna look like in September.”

We’re nearly midway through the year, and the Dream have already knocked off the top-seeded Lynx, the 10-6 Dallas Wings (twice), and the 9-7 Fever (twice). They’ve also defeated the Tempo, Portland Fire, and Washington Mystics, three teams hovering around .500. That’s six playoff-caliber teams, and the two teams they’ve beaten twice, the Wings and Fever, came into the year listed among the title favorites.

What’s even scarier, to Reese’s point, is that 6-foot-3 center Brionna Jones, a four-time WNBA All-Star and the 2024-25 EuroLeague Finals MVP with USK Prague, hasn’t played a single game yet as she recovers from a torn meniscus.

Reese dominated in Chicago as a two-time All-Star and one of the best rebounders in basketball. She’s since carried that over to Atlanta, averaging a career-high 15.3 points to go along with a league-leading 11.9 rebounds per game.

If Atlanta holds its footing through the summer and integrates Jones back into the rotation by September, the Dream could enter the playoffs as the most dangerous team in the WNBA.
