New in-house federal research shows that Canadians see China as a bigger threat than Iran, according to Blacklock’s Reporter.

The poll by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service said that 70% saw Russia and 66% saw China as “significant threats” compared to only 34% who felt that way about Iran.

The March 31 survey called Attitudes to the Canadian Security Intelligence Service , followed Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent announcement of a “new partnership” with China .

“We are creating a dense web of new connections to attract investment,” he said on Jan. 7.

PM praised China’s ‘formidable’ strengths

Almost a week later, Carney went even further during a speech to the Canada-China Business Council in Beijing in which he hailed the country’s “formidable” strengths.

“We need to learn from, partner with and access and build supply chains with China,” he said.

In the poll, other countries named as “considerable threats” were India and Pakistan at 33% and 21%, respectively.

“The greatest concern is in terms of elections,” said the report.

“61% say they are very concerned about foreign interference in elections, followed by interference in government where 58% express high levels of concern. Canadians also express considerable concern about foreign interference in social media platforms. 48% say they are very concerned about foreign interference in this area.”

Pessimistic take on Canada as well

In terms of the perception of Canada, “half of respondents, 52%, feel Canada is more dangerous than it was five years ago,” wrote researchers.

“Tracking results indicate Canadians are now more likely to feel Canada has become more dangerous than they were in 2018 or 2021.”

The study, which cost CSIS $77,695, was conducted by Ekos Research Associates with 2,051 people across Canada.

In an unscripted 2025 debate, Carney called China the biggest threat to Canadian security, a remark he never again repeated.
