Yankees Social Media Spotlight: The Impossible Has Happened

It’s Sunday once more, and you know what that means — it’s time for our weekly social media roundup! Some weeks, putting together this series a bit of a slog, as I scour the web for something, anything, vaguely Yankees-related to highlight. This week, though? Strap in, because between the Knicks’ championship, HOPE Week, Stonewall, Juneteenth, and the World Cup, we’ve got one of our most packed roundups of the season — and that’s before we even actually look at the baseball being played on the field. And so, without further ado, let’s get started!

“Go ahead and cry.”

Last Saturday night, the New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs, 94-90, to notch their first NBA Championship in 53 years. Naturally, the entire New York community, including members of the Yankees family, rallied behind them to celebrate.

On Wednesday, the Yankees kept the celebration going by inviting Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart to throw out a pair of ceremonial first pitches prior to the teams’ 10-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox. While there, they visited the YES (well, technically Amazon Prime) and radio broadcasts before settling into box seats, where Brunson let his intrusive thoughts win.

The Knicks’ win got CC Sabathia thinking about “the Mount Rushmore of NYC athletes,” while Josh Hart declared Cam Schlittler the 2026 Cy Young winner after his dominant performance on Friday night.

HOPE Week

This week, the New York Yankees held their 16th annual HOPE Week, honoring members of the New York City community. They began this week by celebrating Jatee Kearsley, whose bakery strives to keep “delicious pastries” affordable for all, no matter their socio-economic status.

On Tuesday, the Yankees threw a surprise graduation party for Dunia Sibomana-Rodriguez, who underwent 12 surgeries after a chimpanzee attack in his native Democratic Republic of the Congo. Through the Smile Rescue Fund for Kids, he came to the United States, where he became a star wrestler in high school, winning three state championships at Long Beach High School.

Thursday, the team celebrated I Want To Mow Your Lawn, an organization founded during the COVID-19 pandemic in order to help the elderly, veterans, and anyone with physical or financial hardships take care of their lawn, free of charge.

To cap off HOPE Week, the Yankees stayed close to home, recognizing the Bronx Legends Boxing Academy. Located just a mile and a half away from Yankee Stadium, the organization runs after-school activities for students, incorporating SAT prep and academic tutoring into its physical fitness programs.

Stonewall Scholarships

Prior to Wednesday’s game, the New York Yankees announced the recipients of this year’s Yankees-Stonewall Scholarship at Yankee Stadium.

Celebrating Juneteenth

On Friday, the Yankees posted on Facebook to celebrate Juneteenth, the holiday that commemorates “the official end of slavery in the United States.”

World Cup Fever

The only thing that could have made the New York Knicks’ first championship in 53 years more chaotic was the World Cup…so naturally, they happened at the same time. While members of the Yankees have been playing a bit of soccer on the side, groups of foreign fans have descended upon NYC to watch their team play — and to take in the sights while they’re here. Most notably, a group of Scottish fans took over more than a full section of the upper deck on Wednesday, teaching the American fans their soccer chants, and learning from New Yorkers all the profanity-laden chants that New York fans say about Jose Altuve, the Boston Red Sox, Juan Soto, Trae Young, and Victor Wembanyama.
