NFL quarterbacks are burdened with a lot of responsibility that other players don’t have to deal with. Fortunately, Drake Maye has no issue taking on some of the biggest obligations and it’s going to help the Patriots win more games.

Drake Maye showed everyone just how far he can take his game during last year’s MVP-caliber performance and now it’s all about ensuring he continues to play at a high level with the New England Patriots.

Patriots fans are obviously hoping for MVP-worthy seasons, because that means New England will be in the mix, yet again, for regular Super Bowl appearances. If Maye is consistently playing at a high level, that means the Patriots are winning a bunch of games, right?

It tracks, for sure. However, it’s not just attached to what Maye actually does on the field. What he does off the field is just as important and former Patriots quarterback, Brian Hoyer, recently pointed out Maye has been acting a lot like Tom Brady in a certain regard.

“The reason I go with Drake second is not only what he did last year, but what I’m hearing coming out of Patriots camp right now,” Hoyer said on Sirius XM NFL Radio while explaining the reasoning behind his top-5 quarterback rankings, via ESPN.

“A.J. Brown was talking about Drake taking over the meeting room. I was in a room with a guy who did that every day – Tom Brady – and when a quarterback takes ownership like that it can take it to the next level.”

Drake Maye’s 2025 stats

Maye lit the NFL on fire in 2025, showcasing the talent to be a top quarterback for years to come. Below are the stats from his MVP-caliber season:

  • Passing yards: 4,394
  • Passing touchdowns: 31
  • Pass completion rate: 72.0%
  • Interceptions: 8
  • QBR: 77.1
  • Rushing yards: 450
  • Rushing touchdowns: 4
  • Yards per carry: 4.4

Drake Maye now has the resume to be a true leader for the Patriots

Sure, players presume a quarterback will eventually assume the top leadership position on the team. Especially if they’re a top-2 draft pick like Maye.

However, guys don’t fully buy in until a player proves his ultimate worth. For instance, Raiders players never rallied around JaMarcus Russell, nor Ryan Leaf. That’s because those guys never lived up to their billing, on top of dealing with off-field issues, as well.

That’s not the case for Maye after last season. He’s both shown he can play at an elite level and he’s been a true pro on and off the field. The third-year signal-caller is the true mold of a leader, which has allowed him the right to take over meeting rooms.

I mean, even A.J. Brown, who’s only been on the team for a couple of weeks, has bought in.

“To be that young and to understand the defense, and to understand every little check, the hots, the blitz, all those things, so young and so fast it's very impressive," Brown recently told reporters. “And so, I really admire that. He knows what he's talking about. He demands everybody else to know as well. And he's a true leader. He's a true leader of men and it's crazy to see at a young age."

Everything is moving in the right direction for Maye and he’s doing his part to ensure the arrow continues to point up. That’s the perfect mix for a franchise quarterback and it’d be shocking if it doesn’t lead to even more success than what he had in 2025.
