Pittsburgh could look to add some pitching help as well as another impact bat. So, ahead of the trade deadline, ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan named the Pirates a fit for a reunion with Aroldis Chapman to solidify the backend of the bullpen.
“Relief pitchers often are some of the most impactful deadline acquisitions, and Boston's closer is as effective as ever,” Passan wrote in an article published on Wednesday. “Chapman doesn't throw as hard as he once did, but he has four distinct pitches now. …
“Here’s the greatest truism of the deadline: Everyone needs a good reliever. Teams will climb over each other for Chapman. Best fits: Mariners, Pirates, White Sox, Dodgers, Rays, Phillies, Diamondbacks, Cubs, Blue Jays, Guardians.”
Along with Chapman, Passan also connected first baseman and slugger Willson Contreras to the Pirates. However, the insider isn’t sure if Contreras will actually be dealt as he has two more years of control.
Regardless, it does appear that the Pirates could be buyers to get back to the playoffs this season.
Pittsburgh is 38-37 and is one game back of a Wild Card spot.
