Irvin had been committed to Notre Dame since November, but this spring he started to look around for one reason or another. First it was a visit to Missouri with some teammates, and then it was an official visit to Michigan State (his father’s alma mater). After the MSU visit, Notre Dame tried to get him to shut things down, and he cancelled a visit to Texas A&M only to take one to Blacksburg to see James Franklin and the Virginia Tech Hokies.
At that point, Notre Dame did not consider him a part of the 2027 recruiting class, so a decommitment or flip was imminent.
Notre Dame, which dod not suffer any recommitments last cycle, now has a couple this cycle — and they are both linebackers. As it is, however, the Irish are looking great for commitments from 5-Star LB Kaden Henderson from Tampa Bay, and 4-Star Linebacker Roman Igwebuike from Chicago.
Notre Dame should be just fine this cycle at the linebacker position. You hate seeing decommitments, but honestly, a lot of them are probably just a year away from being in the transfer portal anyways. Good luck to Amarri in the future, and hats off to James Franklin — who probably needed a big “win” over ND and Marcus Freeman to stay on the sane train.
