It was the product of political fanaticism, governmental malpractice and moral cowardice. The Biden-Harris administration dismantled enforcement while publicly pretending otherwise. Illinois officials followed enthusiastically.
Americans were instructed not to believe their own eyes.

Within days of taking office, President Donald Trump demonstrated that existing law already granted the executive branch immense authority to secure the border. The excuse that nothing could be done without Congress immediately collapsed.

For years, the public was deliberately misled into believing the executive branch was powerless to respond. Politicians, activists and sympathetic commentators repeated the same rehearsed fiction: Congress had to act first.
But federal law already provided expansive enforcement authority.
The crisis persisted because powerful officials did not want meaningful enforcement. They favored mass release, expanded parole, reduced detention, weakened removals and sanctuary protections that obstructed cooperation with federal authorities.
The border collapse was not mere incompetence.
It was intentional governance.
They obscured reality because acknowledging the truth would expose conscious political decisions.

The human cost was not theoretical.
Communities deteriorated. Systems buckled. Innocent Americans suffered.

Illinois became one of the clearest manifestations of this agenda.
Illinois Democrat Gov. JB Pritzker governed from behind inherited family wealth, entrenched political influence and insulation rarely available to ordinary Americans. Sanctuary policies were elevated above the protection of innocent citizens, while legitimate concerns were ridiculed as xenophobia, ignorance or fearmongering.

Citizens were expected to absorb the fallout quietly while political leaders congratulated themselves for their "compassion."
But slogans are not leadership.

Real leadership requires judgment. Restraint. Foresight. Moral seriousness.

That is the reality they still refuse to confront.
They knew, or absolutely should have known, that innocent people would be harmed under these policies.
Any leader willing to subordinate the safety of citizens to partisan dogma forfeits the moral legitimacy required to govern.
Because political orthodoxy mattered more than innocence. Because power mattered more than prudence.

And because too many in the press chose narrative protection over honest scrutiny.
While they protected reputations and political standing, we had to bury our youngest daughter, Katie.
Empathy became conditional. Moral outrage became selective. Human suffering became partisan calculus.
Imagine the scale of condemnation if identical failures had occurred under a Republican administration. The press would have treated it as a national scandal and evidence of systemic cruelty.
In reality, it should be treated as a scandal regardless of which party controls government. But it became painfully obvious that many media organizations operated with one-sided moral concern. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were too often shielded by euphemism, deflection and political protection.
Truth tellers do not selectively minimize suffering to protect political allies.

What saddens me even further is how quickly this country seems willing to contextualize preventable tragedies depending on which political team is responsible. Too many people who publicly champion compassion and justice suddenly become hesitant when accountability threatens their preferred ideology or political allies.
The victims deserved better.
But Katie Abraham was not a statistic.
She was a daughter. A human being. A future erased.
Her family now carries a permanent wound created by leaders who demanded moral applause while evading moral accountability.
What families like ours endure is not only grief, but the knowledge that this suffering was avoidable. An illegal immigrant with glaring warning signs was allowed to move freely through our state when even minimal vetting, detention or enforcement should have stopped him long before he killed two people, including our youngest daughter, Katie.

Why are they doing this?

Families like ours bury loved ones while political leaders protect narratives, preserve power and evade accountability.
America does not need open borders to be compassionate.
A sovereign nation can welcome legal immigration while enforcing laws, vetting entrants, removing dangerous offenders and protecting its citizens.
That is not extremism.
