Police sources tell the Toronto Sun that Sheldon Tracy-Stewart was arrested Thursday in Toronto and charged with 11 offences for the shooting of the consulate at 360 University Ave . – south of Dundas St. W. – on March 10.
The charges against the accused include discharging of a firearm.
This arrest comes as Chief. Myron Demkiw told the media on Thursday that they were also looking for Zara Jabbi in connection with this shooting.
Police indicate that search for the 19-year-old suspect is ongoing.
All this comes from the backdrop of the heinous murder of Emergency Task Force Const. Marc Pinizzotto , which went down Thursday morning at a North York highrise when a team of officers executed a search warrant involving guns believed to be related to the U.S. consulate incident and other shootings, including of synagogues in the city.
The 43 year-old father of two, who served as a police officer for 18 years, was struck with a bullet that managed to get past his bulletproof fast and his arm and into his heart.
Demkiw said great efforts were made to save Pinizzotto, but they were unsuccessful.
The accused lead shooter, identified as 19-year-old Nicholas Bennett, was also shot six times by a second Emergency Task Force officer.
He was given immediate medical treatment and, like the police officer, was transported via an emergency run to Sunnybrook Hospital where he remains in critical condition and has now been officially charged a first-degree murder.
Arrest made by cops executing second search warrant
While a spokesperson said “Toronto Police are not currently commenting on the investigation,” sources told the Sun that Tracy-Stewart’s arrest resulted from a second search warrant that was executed on the same day as the warrant that went so tragically bad for Const. Pinizzotto.
This one was conducted without incident in a neighbouring apartment building on Martha Eaton Way
Tracy-Stewart charged with theft of a motor vehicle; possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000; discharging a restricted or prohibited firearm at a place; attack on a premises of internationally protected persons; possession of a firearm knowing it’s possession is unauthorized; possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm; and failure to comply with a release order.
Sources say police also located and seized a loaded firearm and bullets.
At the time of his arrest, Tracy-Stewart was out on bail for unrelated charges that were laid against him in April in York Region.
The slaying of Pinizzotto has shaken the Toronto Police Service.
While planning is still underway, it is expected that his funeral will be held next Thursday.
Two Ontario cops killed in line of duty this week
Pinizzotto was the second Ontario cop murdered this week.
Ontario Provincial Police also laid a first-degree murder charge against 18-year-old Justin Verraneau, who remains in custody for the death of OPP Const. Tarun Bali, 29.
The Toronto Sun has not been able to obtain photographs of either accused cop killer.
But the arrest of one of the two alleged shooters in the U.S. consulate is a major development.
