This offseason got off to a shocking start when, suddenly, the breaking news was that Washington had just released starting center Tyler Biadasz. Biadasz had been the starter for both the 2024 and 2025 seasons, and no one in the media was aware that the Commanders were going to move on from Biadasz.

Darnell Stapleton had been an assistant offensive line coach for those same two seasons. This offseason, he was promoted to the offensive line coach. Natalie Spala of Washington's ABC 7 caught up with Stapleton briefly this week after OTAs.

"In this day and age of free agency, it is very rare to have a group almost stay intact for three years," expressed Stapleton. "To have guys that have starting experience here, as well as other places, to keep that group together and up the level of competition, because of the skill set is unique."

Indeed, the Commanders' Sam Cosmi, Nick Allegretti, Brandon Coleman, Andrew Wiley, and Chris Paul enter their third year of the Dan Quinn era. Both starting tackles, Laremy Tunsil and Josh Conerly, return as well. "It's not something I take for granted," said Stapleton. "To have that baseline of guys who have been there, done that, it's good to have," laughed Stapleton, in a recognition that he is blessed to have such a group in his first season as the offensive line coach.

Regarding Allegretti moving from guard, replacing Biadasz at center? "He's a competitor. He's been in the league for a while now; scrappy, reliable, dependable, smart. You know exactly what you are going to get from Nick. He understands we are going to preach it, live it. It's going to be a competition, and he's up to the challenge. Three guys have been getting reps this offseason: Nick, Julian (Good-Jones), and the draft pick Matt (Gulbin). Personally, I am excited about that competition."

Allegretti played center as a youth and in high school and has expressed eagerness to return to center.
