As he stands accused of the murder of his parents, Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, Nick Reiner is demanding $1.5 million from a trust fund set up by his late parents to help defend himself in court.

Nick has filed a petition in a California court requesting money from a trust fund established in his name.

“Nick loved his parents, and he is devastated by their deaths,” the probate petition filed on Monday, says. “But the facts about what did and did not happen to them are not at issue in this Trust litigation.”

Petition claims

The petition claims that one-half of the trust must be distributed to Nick “outright when he turned 30” and the remainder would be given to him when he turned 35. He is now 32. It adds Nick has not yet received the money he should have received at age 30, and that he wasn’t informed of the total amount in the trust, which the petition claims is more than $1.5 million.

Nick stands charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with his parents’ deaths and has pleaded not guilty.

The petition adds that Nick has asked the current trustee about the money for months, and that the trustee “offered a shifting series of excuses and justifications,” and expressed “unsubstantiated concerns about Nick’s so-called competence to ‘manage a trust.'”

The petition argues the trust is “irrevocable,” that the trustee has no right to withhold the money, that there is no judicial ruling that states Nick is incompetent and even if there was, the trustee could only modify the means in which they would distribute the money. It says Nick needs that money to cover legal expenses and buy items such as soap and socks while he’s in jail.

Reiners’ deaths

Rob Reiner, director of such classics as When Harry Met Sally , This Is Spinal Tap , and A Few Good Men , was found stabbed to death alongside his wife on Dec. 14 of last year in their Brentwood mansion. A day earlier, the pair attended a party at the home of former late-night talk show host Conan O’Brien, where Rob Reiner allegedly told friends at the party that he was terrified of his own son. Other partygoers alleged that Nick’s behaviour was making them uncomfortable, with one source telling People , “Nick was freaking everyone out, acting crazy, kept asking people if they were famous.”
