A second collapse on the pitch by Denmark footballer Christian Eriksen has even triggered a response from the country's prime minister.

Eriksen is stable after tests in hospital following his collapse in Sunday's abandoned friendly with Ukraine in Odense.

In scenes similar to 2021, when he had to be resuscitated on the field during a European Championship game, distressed players surrounded him to shield the medical workers. He lost consciousness but could later walk to the ambulance.

As well wishes poured in from across football, Danish leader Mette Frederiksen wrote on Facebook: "My thoughts are with Christian Eriksen ... and all those around him who are affected by this.

"(It's) a great relief that he is doing well under the circumstances."

The 34-year-old VfL Wolfsburg midfielder now has a decision to make about the rest of his career. He was fitted with a special defibrillator under the skin after his 2021 cardiac arrest and resumed playing in 2022.

Doctors who did not treat him have speculated that the device kicked into action on Sunday and possibly saved his life.

The former Ajax, Tottenham and Manchester United player is set to take advice as to the risk of another collapse during a game and if he should retire.

His Wolfsburg side were relegated to the German second division last month and talks were planned this week about whether he would stay at the club.

Denmark's sporting director Peter Møller said of Eriksen's future: "Christian has to answer that. I do not know. I think it is absolutely legitimate to ask about it. But I do not know."
