Broncos Are Managing Salary Cap Situation Well Ahead Of Bo Nix’s Second Contract

The Denver Broncos have established themselves as contenders on the field, and they're doing it in other areas as well. They know that quarterback Bo Nix will be up for a new contract soon, but before that they also had to take care of Pat Surtain II.

What's allowing them to do both is their ability to manage the salary cap. They started last week $25 million under the cap, according to a piece written by Parker Gabriel of the Denver Post. That gave him the ability to give Surtain a $5 million raise, knowing that at the age of 26 he still has many years left in his prime.

“He’s obviously someone that we feel like is elite and at the top of his position,” coach Sean Payton said last week, explaining why Surtain got a raise without a new deal. “Part of that is the salary cap and how that fluctuates and moves, especially in the last three years.”

What the Broncos have done with her salary cap situation is borderline incredible. They've had to deal with over $85 million in dead cap money due to the Russell Wilson contract, but now they have one of the cleanest books in the NFL when it comes to their salary cap situation.

Part of the solution has been rolling over dead cap money into the next year. GM George Paton has become an expert at this. and while it might seem like it's just a minor form of bookkeeping, it becomes important when situations like Surtain’s come up.

The Broncos also use option bonus money to regulat their cap situation. It allows them to stay under the cap, which is important when it comes to the upcoming contract of Bo Nix, who will soon be coming to the end of his rookie deal.

Sometimes this bonus money can be prorated, and the Broncos may be doing that with a contract of receiver Courtland Sutton. He has a large bonus for $12 million that comes due in September, and lowering that amount will be part of their cap strategy.

There are other players in this situation as well. Offensive lineman Garett Bolles is one of them, and his bonus will likely be dealt with in a similar way, according to Gabriel. Doing this on an ongoing basis helps the Broncos stay ahead of the curve.

It will allow them to pay Nix when his day comes, and the Broncos are constantly trying to give themselves the maximum amount of flexibility. They won't be able to do this with Nix, but setting things up this way helps the Broncos keep good players around him.
