Tennessee baseball's Jay Abernathy to enter transfer portal

Tennessee baseball utility player Jay Abernathy will enter the transfer portal, according to multiple reports on June 2.

Abernathy, a rising junior, is the ninth Tennessee player to enter the portal this cycle and the most prominent position player to do so.

Abernathy made 39 starts in 2026 while usually playing second base or center field. He hit .236 with three home runs and 16 RBIs and led the Vols with nine stolen bases. Abernathy started all four of Tennessee's postseason games between the SEC and NCAA tournaments.

He hit .282 with 27 starts as a freshman after enrolling at Tennessee as a top-75 ranked prospect in the class of 2024, per Perfect Game. Abernathy finished tied for the team lead in stolen bases (8).

Abernathy is the cousin of former Tennessee football player Micah Abernathy, who played for the Vols from 2015-18.
