WEATHER: Severe cold snap expected to hit Gauteng this week

Gauteng residents have experienced a relatively mild and stable winter weather so far this year, but that could soon change as temperatures are expected to drop significantly later this week.

According to AccuWeather, weather conditions in Gauteng will follow a typical winter pattern characterised by icy mornings, mild afternoons and chilly evenings.
From Wednesday, temperatures across most parts of the province are expected to range from the low to high teens.
In Johannesburg, temperatures are forecast to drop to as low as 4°C on Thursday morning, with a maximum temperature of 16°C.
The City of Gold also has a 60% chance of rain, which could make conditions feel even colder.
Gauteng weather to change
The cold weather is expected to intensify on Friday, with temperatures struggling to climb above 10°C.
Pretoria is likely to experience warmer conditions until Thursday morning, when temperatures are expected to fall to a minimum of 5°C. A 50% chance of thundershowers has also been forecast for the capital city.
On Friday and Saturday, temperatures in Pretoria are expected to remain in the mid-teens, with mostly sunny conditions prevailing throughout the day.
After several weeks of relatively mild weather, Gauteng residents are set to experience their first real taste of winter in 2026 from Thursday onwards.
The South African Weather Service is expected to provide further updates throughout the week on the provinces and regions that could be affected by the approaching cold snap.
